Yay! Reveal day is here! Our kids’ playroom is all done! We love how it turned out and I’m so excited to share it with you. This DIY room project began when I submitted our kids’ playroom project for the Home Depot Orange Tank competition that took place at the Haven Conference in July 2019.

I was selected as one of the 12 finalists to present my project. This was my first time attending this conference and I sure was nervous presenting to a large group of individuals.

Presenting my pitch to the Home Depot team and a group of
influencers at the Haven Conference 2019
There were three category prizes to be won and at the end of the conference, a finalist was selected from each category. Although I did not win from the selected category, I won an additional category prize – to furnish a dream project with home decor products from HomeDepot.com. AMAZING, RIGHT?!

Thank you, Home Depot, for this opportunity to partner with the team on our dream project to finish our kids’ playroom!

Design Plan
– the before –

Here is the playroom before the wall below the window was demo’d.
We needed storage in the playroom and I knew a built-in bench cabinet was
necessary for this space.

If you missed it, I previously shared our design plans and inspirations for the playroom. You can also check out the progress of this DIY room project, including how I installed primed shiplap planks vertically.

The playroom is a special space in our home. A lot of love was put into making this room perfect for our kids, from early mornings and into the nights. You can see behind the scenes progress in my Instagram Stories.

We’re enjoying the playroom already – learning, playing, watching movies and experiencing good, fun times with the kids. I’m getting emotional writing this up! It’s been awesome to finally personalize the kids’ play space, adding my personal touches in every corner.
I’m sure you’re all excited for this reveal. We absolutely love our kids’ play space and hope you love the transformation as much as we do!

Wall Treatments

With two types of wall treatments in our home – board and batten wainscoting in our kids’ bedroom and shiplap wall planks in our foyer – I knew I wanted to add a wall treatment to the playroom as well. I decided to install pre-primed shiplap boards with nickel gap again in this room, but in the vertical direction.

This orientation elevates the room and adds height to the space, making the room feel larger. There will be a blog post with a full step by step tutorial on installing vertical shiplap planks in your home. Stay tuned!

I installed board and batten trim details around the windows to add variety to the space. It allows for the window to stand out as it’s a unique area in the room.
Paint Colors

We decided to paint the shiplap planks with Behr paint, color-matched to Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace in a satin finish. This is my favorite go-to white paint color. We’ve used it in our master bedroom, foyer and on our kitchen cabinets. This color makes the room feel airy and modern. The ceiling was painted in a flat finish, Sherwin Williams Ultra White.

I took a bold decision to repaint the door leading to our media room with Benjamin Moore Black Beauty and I love how it makes the door stand out.
Playroom Details

One of my favorite additions to the playroom is this built-in cabinet for toy storage, complete with a seating area for reading. A custom bench cushion will be placed on the bench for extra comfort.

I love mixing metals in spaces. For the kids’ room, I needed cabinet hardware that’s durable and kid-friendly. I love these streamlined oil-bronzed drawer pulls.

Do your kids have a lot of artwork and you’ve wondered what to do with it all? I decided to use our kids’ artwork to personalize this space. They can choose which of their artwork to display; it allows our kids to be part of the design process as well as display their creativity.

What’s a playroom with no book display? Our kids have A LOT of books and I had to dedicate a wall space to display them all. The entrance of the playroom was perfect! I love these acrylic bookshelves to display their books. It’s simple, modern and doesn’t obstruct the beauty of the shiplap walls.

I built this house-shaped chalkboard. It’s sturdy and easily movable around the playroom. Our kids love it so much. I love a simple DIY project that adds beauty to a space. I used 4’ x 4’ plywood and 0.5” x 8’ MDF boards to build the chalkboard.

A Peek Into The…

Do you notice a door?
There is an attic space on our second floor that we can only access it through the garage. It’s really inconvenient so we knew we wanted to do something to make it easier to access.

The attic space shares a wall with the playroom. We installed a custom flush door in the playroom to access the attic.

I installed shiplap planks on the door so it would blend into the wall treatment in the rest of the room, making it a hidden door. We didn’t want it to be obvious that there was a door opening as you walk into the playroom.. Super cool, right? What do you think?
