What a year 2020 has been so far! We all started off this year motivated to achieve the best, and now we’ve been confined in our homes to “flatten the curve” and save lives.
For some of you, staying at home has been challenging while for others, it’s been okay. Either way, times like this have made us appreciate each other more and helped us to build stronger relationships with family and close friends.
I’m grateful for technology like FaceTime, Zoom, and WhatsApp. We can connect with people around the globe more often. I recently attended a friend’s virtual birthday party!
I had a great time seeing friends that I haven’t seen in person for over eight years. It was nice to catch up and see their beautiful faces.
Eco-Friendly household products?
In the season of celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, I’m happy to share with you the eco-friendly household products I use in my home. I love that these products are less harmful and less toxic to the environment.
During the years of living on my own, I never paid attention to the products I used in my home. I became attracted to safer, natural household products when I was pregnant with my firstborn.

As a first-time mom, I wanted to make sure our home was safe for our little one. I found myself researching the ingredients of household products and how each ingredient can impact our health. This meant replacing all the household products used to wash our clothes, clean dishes, clean around the house and much more.
It was interesting to discover some shocking facts about the cleaning products we were using in our home. It’s been over five years since I switched to using natural, eco-friendly products and I’m satisfied knowing that my family is less exposed to toxic ingredients.
Let’s get into the top five reasons I made the switch.

Safer Products for Family

Many traditional cleaning products are made of volatile organic chemicals (VOC) that release dangerous toxins. Eco-friendly household products are much less toxic and harmful.
Their ingredients consist of plant-derived and biodegradable, and usually with essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances. Be aware that not all of these products are the same; it’s important that you still research each ingredient on the label.
With my little ones at home, I wanted my family to be less exposed to harmful chemicals. Our home is a safe haven and that is why I use eco-friendly products to keep my family safe and healthy indoors.
Protect Our Health

Did you know that household cleaning products are one of the most toxic products in our homes? These products have contributed to causing and exacerbating health issues such as asthma, skin reactions, headaches, cancer and much more. This is one of the alarming reasons why I made the switch.
Harsh chemicals such as chlorine and ammonia in traditional cleaning products reduce the air quality in our homes. I couldn’t allow my family to keep inhaling toxins that will affect our health long-term.
Effective But Less Costly
Eco-friendly household products are as effective as regular cleaning products but are surely less toxic. Most of these products are multiple purposes and clean various surfaces, making them less costly as a whole.
I don’t need to purchase a separate natural cleaning product to clean our kitchen countertops and another for stainless steel surfaces – I’m able to get through multiple cleaning tasks with an all-purpose household cleaner. This reduces the cleaning supplies needed for our home.
Transparency
To discovered that popular household cleaning brands aren’t required to disclose their product ingredients was shocking! This reason alone sparked my desire to switch to safer and natural household products. It’s important to pay attention to ingredients on cleaning products at the grocery stores.

Some eco-friendly products state they consist of natural ingredients but you want to make sure the products you use in your home are free from phosphates, parabens, phthalates, petroleum, formaldehyde and artificial fragrances, dyes or additives.
Protect the Environment
I believe not only should we protect our health, but we should all strive to protect our planet Earth. This is a team effort and we can contribute by reducing the toxic chemicals we use in our homes.
Natural household products are safe for us and are earth-friendly. These eco-friendly cleaning products reduces the amount of toxins released into the air. In addition, the packaging materials (e.g., spray bottles) for eco-friendly products are made out of recyclable materials, are reusable and reduces waste.
Eco-Friendly Products I Use in My Home

I want to leave you with some of the eco-friendly products I use in my home. I’ve been using these home cleaning and laundry products for five years now and I love them so much.
All-Purpose Cleaners
My two favorites are Seventh Generation All-Purpose Cleaner (Free & Clear) and Mrs. Meyers All-Purpose Cleaner. These two products are the most-used in my home. I use them to clean multiple surfaces and deodorize spaces from the kitchen to the bathrooms.

I also love the scented fragrances from Mrs. Meyer’s All-Purpose Cleaner. It has a powerful mix of essential oils that remove dirt and freshen up any space.
Bathroom Sparkling Cleaners
Method Antibacterial Cleaners and Method Antibacterial Toilet Bowl Cleaners tackle all things in the bathrooms. These cleaners consist of essential oils that have tough cleaning powers that break down soap scum and hard water stains. It also kills most bacteria and viruses.

Kitchen Dishwashing Love
Mrs. Meyer’s Dish Soap and Seventh Generation Dish Soap are my favorites. These liquid dish soaps are effective in removing grease and stubborn residues from our dishes.

In the dishwasher, I use Seventh Generation Dishwasher pods along with Lemi Shine Dishwasher Booster and Shine & Dry Rinse to remove grease and soften the water for a better wash.
For tough stains on surfaces or heavy duty messes, Mrs. Meyer’s Vinegar Gel and Bon Ami Powder Cleaner are my go-tos.
Laundry Care
Laundress Signature Detergent, All-Purpose Bleach Alternative and Stain Solution are one powerful combination for most laundry care. I use these products to wash my family’s clothes.
The Signature Detergent is a plant-derived, biodegradable and cruelty-free detergent with a mix of essential oils and fragrances that fights stains and removes dirt from our clothes. Hence, why I love them all!

Laundress All-Purpose Bleach Alternative is a non-toxic, fragrance-free, chlorine-free oxygen bleach alternative. It removes tough stains, especially on my little ones’ clothes combined with Laundress Stain Solution.
I also love the multiple-purpose ability of Laundress Bleach Alternative. I use this product to also remove tough stains on my carpet and rugs. It also used to cleanse and deodorize your dishwasher and washing machine. The Laundress All-Purpose Bleach Alternative is definitely a great eco-friendly and safe product to have in your home.
