Keeping your child’s playroom organized and safe can be a repetitive and daunting task, especially when toys and other items accumulate over time. It’s important to avoid potential hazards such as choking or tripping. To tackle this challenge, now is the perfect time to explore different ways to refresh and organize the playroom.
Here are a few kids’ playroom ideas to help clear the clutter and improve the environment for optimal play and learning time.
How to Organize Your Kids’ Playroom
Storage Containers
If you’re having trouble with how to organize a playroom, containers are your best friend. Storage bins are great options to keep a playroom organized, as you can keep toys, supplies, games, and more organized into their own separate spaces.

Clear storage bins in particular are useful as you can see the contents within the bin without having to open it.
Compared to a large toy box, baskets, and canisters also make great organization tools to separate items and toys, as it can be hard for your kids to find certain toys without emptying the entire box.
Labeling
Use labels to keep track of everything you just found a home for so you and your little ones can easily put things back where they belong. Broad categories are best rather than very specific ones.
For the younger kids who are still learning to read, you can use picture labels and for the older kids, word labels work great. You can use adhesive pouches and index cards or make labels using a vinyl cutting machine.
Utilize Built-in Cabinets or Well Sturdy and Secured Furniture
You must use built-in cabinets or sturdy and secured furniture for your kid’s playroom. Fastening any furniture or shelves to the wall will prevent them from falling over.

You can also use cabinets or closets that have a lock for items that require adult supervision.
Maximize Wall Storage
In addition to shelves and cabinets that provide plenty of storage, don’t forget to look for storage that makes the most of your available space. You can maximize wall storage with shelves, hanging bag storage, and art strings.
Easels and whiteboards can take up a lot of space as well, so you can also utilize walls as an alternative surface by installing a whiteboard or chalkboard for your kids to draw on.
If you have a closet in the playroom, here are some tips on how to organize your kids’ closet and maximize wall space in there as well.
Group Items By Type
To keep things easy to find, it’s best to group items by type by using baskets and storage carts.
These are great for storing little toys as well as art and craft supplies. This way you and your kids will know exactly where those items are when the time comes to use them.
Set Up a Cleaning Routine for Your Kids
Routines are great for kids’ room organization. Teaching your kid’s how to keep their playroom organized and the importance of keeping their space neat is crucial to their growth and development of good habits.
Set a routine to clean and tidy up the toys together with your kids. A great way is by setting up a timer and playing their favorite music every night before bed.
This is also a great educational opportunity to teach your kids good habits and how to put items back into their proper places quickly.
5 Ways To Refresh Your Kids’ Playroom
Decorate With Purpose
When it comes to decorating our kid’s playroom, you should pick a theme and decorate it with learning concepts that you want to reinforce.
The use of items like solar systems, numbers, the alphabet, and social emotion charts is eye-catching and can also double as a learning tool. You can create a new feature like a reading corner or art corner to keep things exciting.
You can also go with a casual and modern playroom to create a calming and loving space for you and your kids.
Be sure to involve your kids in the process and incorporate their style when it comes to refreshing your playroom.
Display Their Favorite Pieces
To make the space more fun and inviting, you can put their favorite toys and art on display.
When their favorite items are easily accessible, they will most likely go for that toy first. This can reduce the chances of them making a mess by going through the storage to find their favorite things.
Another way to refresh your kids’ playroom is to display their favorite art pieces they create by repurposing old frames to further customize their space.

Organize Toys, Games, and Puzzles
To keep a playroom organized be sure to use transparent or colored bins, baskets, buckets, and other storage solutions that are easily accessible. This is simple for children to recognize the toys inside.
A quick way to save on space is to get rid of the boxes that games and puzzles come in. Putting these items into clear plastic portfolios or clear zipper bags.
These portfolios or clear zipper bags can easily fit into bins and make room for more games.
Rotate Toys
Keep things interesting and bring newness to playing by rotating toys and displaying items that have been out of circulation for a bit.
When you have too many play options, it can make it difficult for children to decide what to play with and can result in them getting bored or frustrated.
Switch things out every few weeks to keep things fun.

Donate & Declutter Toys Frequently
You can create a donation pile for toys that are no longer needed or played with to decrease clutter in the playroom. Be sure to involve your children in the process so that they know the importance of rehoming items and helping others.
You can either donate to charity or find a neighbor or friend who has young children that would enjoy the toys.
You can also sell the items at a yard sale or Facebook marketplace and you can use the money to purchase new ones.
Any toys that are damaged or dangerous should be disposed of.

I love your style approach and how you make everything not only beautiful but also functional. Your house is stunning!
I loved reading this although I no longer have young children. Now I have 6 grandchildren! One family of 5 lives in a 1200 sq ft home which is very hard to manage with the kid’s things. The two boys are actually neater than the girl but the girl’s Barbie’s and all the tiny toys that go with that and gsbby’s doll house and others is a huge challenge. For some reason it never occurred to me about clear bums so they don’t pour it all out to see what is there. So many great ideas here that I will use to help them in the small space. Great article. Thank you.
Yes! we feel you with the Barbie toys and the tiny dolls. We completely understand! Yes, clear bins are the way to go. We are glad these tips were so helpful!
